The argument of the Data Management Summit roundtable will focus the attention of attendees to the vision of vendors and experts on Data Governance. The Data Management Summit 2019 will be held on September 17th at the University of Pavia (Italy) and on October 16th at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (Spain).
We are not in the «digital transformation» we have to speak rather of «habit of digital evolution». Because it is a continuous process, not something punctual. A process that needs Data Governance in the same way that it needs other aspects related to data (Data Quality, Data Analyzing, Data Virtualization, etc.). On second thought, we are in the era of Metadata. If it is true that Business Intelligence has crystallized the strategy (going from «what» to do to «how» to do it), Data Virtualization has made it possible to free data from physical links; Data Governance is going to focus its efforts on metadata. It no longer matters how much data we can treat or how we treat it. We need to know what this data says and who decides to say something.
This is the focus of the http://datamanagementsummit.org roundtable that will be facilitated in Italy by Gigi Beltrame, Technologist, and author of the book Digilosofia and in Spain by Carlos Bachmaier DPO and Ciso de Las Loteria del Estado Español and member of ISACA.
What do the experts think?
According to Gigi Beltrame: “Let us start with the term «digital», which is one of the most abused, exploited and misunderstood of the last period. Digital means that a given operation is performed through tools that reason only in terms of 0 and 1, the digital alphabet. Digital technology alone does not change the procedures and the way something is done, but it has an incredible advantage over analog technology. In fact, it is perfectly replicable and easy to find. Digital technology has existed for many years. What we are experiencing is a different phase, so much so that we have added the word transformation. The information has always been the basis of business, from how many eggs have been exchanged to get a skin that covers from cold onwards, we have always tried to measure everything. Now we are living a new phase: the software not only predicts but with artificial intelligence prescribes what to do and often does it autonomously.
According to Gartner, «Data demands are constantly increasing within organizations. These range from demands for easier and more flexible data access, through greater data governance, to the hope of being able to quantify the value of data and sell it. These diverse data expectations in an increasingly complex and distributed data landscape are shifting organizations’ focus from data management to metadata management, hoping that if data is unmanageable, metadata will be easier to master.
«One thing is certain. Having a Governance tool is not an option, it is a natural evolution in a scenario of multiple data sources and virtualization itself has encouraged» states Michele Iurillo, Founder of the Data Management Summit, «Data Governance prepares us in the process of digital transformation. It’s a shame that this isn’t the case, and this is demonstrated by a large number of data management projects that fail miserably,» says Stefano Epifani, president of the Institute for Digital Transformation, director of Technological Economy and professor of Internet and Social Media Studies at La Sapienza University in Rome. – The impact of data on digital transformation processes is very high today. It is the data that allows us to move from the dimension and the «how» to do things to the dimension of «what» makes sense to do, which is the true turning point of the Digital Transformation. The fact,» continues Epifani, «is that today the focus is on data, but we will have to change them for algorithms, otherwise, we will drown in unprecedented chaos of information. The real challenge, in a context where data becomes merchandise, is how to manage it. That’s why talking about data management today is fundamental, because it means talking about business strategy and management.”
